Ingredients
For the Pastry
1 package of puff pastry or premade pie crust
3/4 cup fruit jam of your choice (I love seedless strawberry)
1 large egg + 1 Tablespoon water for eggwash
For the Icing
2-3 Tablespoon heavy cream or milk
1/2 cup powdered sugar
Instructions
Prepare The Crusts: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the pie crusts or puff pastry from the fridge and let them sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.
Roll Out Dough: Lightly flour your non-stick baking mat and roll out each pie crust or puff pastry to thin it slightly. Avoid making it too thick, as this will overpower the filling. A few passes with the rolling pin should do the trick.
Cut Shapes: Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out as many hearts as possible from each crust. Gather any scraps, re-roll if desired, and cut out more hearts.
Assemble Tarts: Working in batches of 4, brush the entire surface of one heart with the whisked egg wash. Add about 1 tablespoon of the jam mixture to the center. Place another heart on top and gently press the edges together.
Seal Edges: Use a fork to crimp the edges of each tart , ensuring they’re well sealed. Use a toothpick to poke a small hole in the center of each tart to allow steam to escape.
Bake: Place the tarts on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 18–20 minutes, or until golden brown.
For the glaze: Mix 1/2 cup powdered sugar with 1–2 tablespoons of milk until smooth. Add food coloring for a festive touch!
Cool & Glaze: Let the tarts cool completely on a wire rack. If desired, drizzle with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and milk for an extra sweet touch.
Notes:
Pie crust vs Puff pastry: Using pie crust will will bake a solid, firm base for the tart similar to store bought poptarts. Puff pastry will bake light, flaky, and crisp, with layers that create a delicate crunch
Get creative with the filling! Try strawberry jam, Nutella, or even lemon curd.
Store Tarts in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the fridge for up to a week.
