Gingerbread Cookies with Maple Glaze
Soft, spiced gingerbread cookies get a festive upgrade with a sweet and thick maple glaze. Perfect for holiday gatherings or as a cozy treat with your favorite cup of tea, these cookies are easy to make and packed with flavor.
Ingredients
For the Cookies
3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1/3 cup molasses
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (300 grams)
2 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1–2 teaspoons ground ginger
Granulated sugar for rolling
Christmas Sprinkles
For the Maple Glaze
1 tablespoon melted butter
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar (180 grams)
2 tablespoons milk (add a tiny bit more if needed)
Pinch of salt, to taste
Instructions
Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Prepare the Dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the egg and molasses, mixing until fully combined.
Incorporate Dry Ingredients: Add the flour, baking soda, salt, and ground ginger to the wet ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.
Shape the Cookies: Scoop small portions of dough (about the size of a ping pong ball) and roll into balls. Coat each ball in granulated sugar.
Bake: Place the dough balls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, spacing them evenly. Bake for 9–11 minutes, or until the edges are just set. Remove from the oven and transfer the cookies to a cooling rack. They will flatten slightly as they cool.
Make the Glaze: While the cookies cool, whisk together the melted butter, maple syrup, powdered sugar, milk, and a pinch of salt. The glaze should be thick but dippable; if needed, add a teaspoon of milk at a time to adjust the consistency.
Decorate the Cookies: Once the cookies have cooled, dip one sidle into the maple glaze. Run the edge of the cookie along the bowl to remove any excess glaze. Place the cookies on wax paper and, if desired, top with sprinkles before the glaze sets.
Enjoy these festive cookies with friends and family, or save a batch to savor with your favorite holiday beverage. They're a delightful addition to any celebration!
Notes:
Glaze Dipping Tip: Dip one side of each cookie into the glaze and lightly scrape the excess against the bowl for a clean, polished look.
Decorating Touch: Add festive sprinkles or crushed nuts immediately after glazing to ensure they stick before the glaze sets.
Storage: Store glazed cookies in a single layer in an airtight container to prevent sticking. They stay fresh for 3-4 days at room temperature or up to 2 weeks refrigerated.
